The CORE 2010 Technical Field Trips have been planned to give delegates the opportunity to further their professional development by supplementing their conference learnings with field experience of selected conference topics and some of the unique features of New Zealand railway engineering and operation. Each field trip offers a rare opportunity to spend time with people intimately involved with the featured projects and daily operation of New Zealand’s railway system.
Hyundai-Rotem Technical Tour – Positively Electric WellingtonOver the past 24 months Wellington has seen a significant upgrade of its railway network as part of the overall rejuvenation and renaissance of the New Zealand railway network. This extensive programme works within the Wellington rail yards, on the geologically challenging Johnsonville line, and the aged Wellington electrified network as well as extending the reach of the metropolitan network to the North.
Hyundai-Rotem Technical Tour – Rolling Stock and DepotsThe rejuvenation and renaissance of the New Zealand rolling stock fleet and depots will be in full view, with displays and presentations covering a range of new and refurbished rolling stock, and new and old depot and workshop facilities.
North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) Technical Tiki TourThe rejuvenation and renaissance of New Zealand’s longest passenger line can be experienced on this special overnight trip that will encompass the technical ingenuity of Kiwi engineers whilst witnessing the scenic wonders and continuing geological challenges of the North Island.
Coal Through the Hole – An Alpine ExperienceThe South Island’s Coal Route transverses some of New Zealand’s most picturesque, yet geometrically and geologically challenging of landscapes. Formerly the domain of brave pioneers and coachmen, the rail route was driven west so that the eastern province of Canterbury could benefit from the wealth of the western gold fields, rather than it being shipped North to Nelson and beyond.
From the complex new track layout at the key Newmarket Junction to the huge trench running through the busy New Lynn town centre, take a journey through the heart of Auckland and understand the unique challenges presented by a series of major construction projects within a live rail corridor.
Take in the 16km Western Line Duplication, an ambitious section of corridor widening and replacement of several major rail overbridges, and find out along the way how the next phase of Auckland’s rail development will unfold as electrification ramps up.
