Wellington
Time:
7.45am – 4.30pm
Cost:
NZ$75 per person (lunch provided)

Over the past 24 months Wellington has seen a significant upgrade of its railway network as part of the overall rejuvenation and renaissance of the New Zealand railway network. This extensive programme involved works within the Wellington rail yards, on the geologically challenging Johnsonville line, and the aged Wellington electrified network as well as extending the reach of the metropolitan network to the North. Visit the key features of the upgrade programme from the picturesque Wellington city sites out to the scenic Kapiti Coast. Travel the Johnsonville line through the tunnels lowered to accommodate the new Matangi EMU, and into the reconfigured Wellington rail yards. Enjoy a buffet lunch and a presentation at the iconic Wellington Stadium (the “Cake-tin”) which overlooks the Wellington rail yards. Following lunch you will observe the loading/unloading of the interisland rail ferry which moves rolling stock between the North and South Island rail networks.

The technical highlights of the tour include:

  • the double tracking and electrification of 15 km of railway track between McKays Crossing and Waikanae
  • the lowered tunnels and track upgrades on the Johnsonville Line
  • the upgrades to the 1600v DC overhead systems and the addition of balance weight tensioning
  • the new 1600v DC substations and SCADA control systems
  • the addition of a third mainline track servicing the Wellington Railway Station
  • the loading and unloading of rail wagons on the Aratere roll-on roll-off interisland rail ferry.

Participants are advised to bring appropriate warm clothing, raincoat and stout shoes. Hi-viz safety vests will be supplied.
